Chapel of the Church of Sweden New York
Appelquist Architects has won the competition and have awarded and commission for the renovation and design of the Church of Sweden New York. Located 48th St x 5 Ave in midtown Manhattan just a block away from the Rockefeller Center. The Church is undergoing a complete renovation of their existing facilities, the proposal offers a renewed program and spaces to facilitate the growing number of Swedish population in New York. not only hosting religious functions but serve as a cultural hub for its community and members.
“Appelquist Architects vision breathes new life and light into the building through the opening of the northern courtyard facade, creating an exciting counterpoint to the beautiful glass façade on 48th street. The proposal integrates both the building’s history and tradition with innovation and modern elements, as well as a consistently Scandinavian sense of design and material, reflecting the activity of religious and cultural roots.“
– Anders Holst Chairman of the Church of Sweden New York.
Digital + Analog + Craftsmanship
I am so happy to have received photographs from the fabricator David Button of this intricate stair that I designed. A-symetrical stringer, stainless steel support bars, Stainless steel twisted tread casing, and stainless steel stringer cover - in collaboration with Workspace 11 & Milgo Bufkin. They really did a great job and its so exiting to bring form to life through a dialogue between the digital, analog and the craftsmen.
